Immersive Adventure

I’ve been quiet here at dlhcreative.com for quite a while. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy…

Since late 2011, when I was selected to become on of the first Google Trusted Photographers, most all of my working time has been focused on developing and operating my immersive media company trustedphoto.com.

The Coronavirus pandemic has unexpectedly halted all on-location photoshoots. During this time I’ve had the time to look back and reminisce about the memorable experiences and projects I’ve developed while working as an immersive media creator.

Tiny Planet view created from a high-resolution HDR 360° panoramic photo captured from inside the pinnacle of the Colorado State Capitol dome. The gold dome was added in post using Photoshop.

From the depths of Grand Canyon to the pinnacle of the Colorado State Capitol’s gold dome, I’ve been fortunate to work with amazing clients from a very wide range of industries. I’ve developed deep experience and a skill set focused on emerging VR and AR technology while creating impactful 360° photo & 360° video content along with custom virtual experiences.

Building on my formal education in Photography over the last 20 years, I’ve worked in a range of positions that all combined, give me the ability to provide a strong range of visual services including:

2018 - Year end wrap up.

2018 filled my year with challenge, joy, and a couple of major milestones. Here in Evergreen coming into the last few days of the year I’m reflective of the places I’ve been and people I’ve connected these last 12 months…

Turned 40.

I had the ultra-relaxing pleasure of ringing in my 40th with Nichole and Kona at the five-star Dunton Hot Springs resort in Southwest Colorado.

Proposed to the love of my life.

On March 24th, 2018 I popped the question to Nichole on our back porch overlooking the Continental Divide. My original plan to surprise her on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol (where we met) was thwarted when she called and said she’d be coming home instead of joining a protest there that morning. I scrambled to buy some beautiful flowers and still managed to take her off-guard when she arrived home. Check out this 360° “Tiny Planet” of our moment…

I captured this moment using my Ricoh Theta V 360° camera. I’m so happy to have this moment saved in 360°!

Got married.

On October 13th, 2018 I married Nichole in a beautiful ceremony among the trees near our home in Evergreen, Colorado.  With about 150 people in attendance and truly extraordinary planning by Nichole (and me a little) the evening was everything we could have wanted.

Went on the best honeymoon to Kauai.

One month after the wedding we took off for Kauai. We enjoyed lots of beachtime, a helicopter tour with a stop at the Jurrasic Park waterfall, driving around in our Jeep exploring the unique astounding scenery and eating all of the poke.

Standing up to mental illness.

After we got back from Kauai, I crashed into a deep depression. I knew it was coming and fought to keep it at bay, maybe a little too long. I didn’t want to start my new family on the down. But I didn’t really have a choice. You see I’ve been struggling with my mental health for the better part of the last two decades. I’ve done countless hours of therapy, practiced mindfulness & yoga, years of restricted diets, gotten plenty of exercise, and tried out many recommended supplements. All of these efforts (and support from Nichole and family) helped to keep me going through the founding of my company, building a life and relationship with my now wife and all of the other challenges through my thirties, but it wasn’t enough.

This time around I realized trying to do this the all-natural way just wasn’t enough. So I went to my doctor and had a deeply honest, terrifying, reassuring and clearing conversation. Now after so many years of fearing a little tiny pill, my medication is helping to calm the screaming self-doubt and self-sabotage that has plagued me throughout my adult life. I’m hopeful and capable in doing what doesn't slow me down. Who am I to play small?

Not enough fly fishing.

The year you're planning a wedding demands the sacrifice of more than a few weekends where in year's past days were spent around rivers with good friends while fly fishing for Rocky Mountain trout. Those days will return and they will be better. Now with scarcity comes even more sacredness. Here fishy fishy...

Just a few buisinesses.

In January of 2012 I became a Google Trusted Photographer. Along with the great new credential came a lot of great new clients. Over the past 14 months I have completed more still photography in hugely varying environments for my clients than I have ever before in any period prior. My experience and knowledge were tested and expanded greatly.

I want to share with you a portfolio of some of my favorite images captured with businesses recently. Please take a look at the gallery below...

These images are only one side of what I worked on last year. I also spent the last half of 2012 and a few months into 2013 travelling around the US photographing inked chefs and their food for my book project called Eat, ink. I will be sharing some of the photos from this project soon and the book will be out in Nov. 2013!

FEATURED PROJECT OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Christmas has just passed and I am just now able to post this month's Featured Gallery Project of the Month.

I am proud to announce a project I have been working hard to bring to reality. Eat, ink. is a book about Food, Chefs, and their Tattoos I have been working on for the last year and a half with my cousin Birk O'Halloran.

This project has been more than fun. I've made three trips to NYC for nine photoshoots so far. I've faced some of the greatest photographic challenges of my career. We created a 37 page proposal/sample book. The result even got the attention of a top literary agency!

Please keep an eye on the website. We'll be posting more preview images from the book soon!

Occupy Denver - October 15th, 2011 - Rally and March on the Federal Reserve

Jeannie Hartley speaks to the people outside of the Federal Reserve building in Denver, Colorado during the Occupy Denver rally and march, Oct. 15th, 2011Occupy Denver in solidarity with the Occupy Wall St. movement has caught my attention since the first people set up camp in New York City over a month ago. Today, in downtown Denver an estimated 3-5000 people joined together in one voice. We marched to and surrounded the Federal Reserve.

The protests later turned violent when back at Civic Center Park a small group chose to block Broadway with a sit-in protest. Police used tear-gas, pepper spray and batons to break up the group with some arrests being made.

Please take a moment to view my photographs from today's march.

FEATURED GALLERY OF THE MONTH - OCTOBER

Colorado State Patrol officers evict the Occupy Denver protesters in the early AM hours of 10/14/11.After putting down the camera and taking most of the month of September for vacation time travelling throughout southwestern Colorado, I've been very busy working on special projects and being a part of the Occupy Wall St. movement from here in Denver, Colorado.

Last night, I witnessed a large police action to clear the Occupy Denver camp in Lincoln Park at the foot of the Colorado State Capitol building in Denver.

I arrived about 11PM the mandated curfew Gov. Hickenlooper stated would be the time for the camp to go. Tensions were high as an action by the police was expected. The crowd was peaceful. Still, something powerful was about to happen.

On my way into the park, I saw Denver Police rigging up in riot gear and other police officers setting up a processing facility on the plaza between the Denver Public Library and Denver Art Museum.

About 3:15AM , the Colorado State Patrol officers in full riot gear stormed the park. By daybreak, the camp was completely gone and 23 protesters were arrested.

Please take a look at my Flikr photostream for images from the Occupy Denver movement.

FEATURED GALLERY OF THE MONTH(s) - JULY/AUGUST

Where has the summer gone? Working hard and playing hard. The Colorado mountains this summer have been my respite from the heat of the city just about every weekend for the past three months. Their beauty seems to be increasingly inticing every time I get to explore a little more of Colorado's hidden corners. Fly fishing has been as good as I've ever seen it! I've been working on more photography projects. I've also expanded into web design and development!

Please take a moment to check out my brand new portfolio featuring recently completed web design and development projects.  DLH Creative - Web Design and Development Portfolio

Enjoy.

Daniel

FEATURED GALLERY OF THE MONTH - JUNE

This month I'm taking you over to my photography gallery hosting website dlhcreative.zenfolio.com. I want to show you my work with the band Pressing Strings from Annapolis, MD. This group plays great music. I've been fortunate to have been welcomed to many of their shows while I was in the Baltimore/Annapolis area over the past couple of years.

In my photography of the band at various shows, I've been experimenting with RAW format capture and processing using Photoshop CS5. Being able to create styles post-capture is an amazing benefit. Being trained in traditional film photography techniques I still feel it's almost cheating though. But if I can increase the speed and level of my creativity while not sacrificing quality, I am all for it.

Enjoy.

Daniel

FEATURED GALLERY OF THE MONTH - MAY

This month I would like to show you my Graphic Design portfolio...

Click above to view my virtual Graphic Design portfolio.
Not only have I been a professional Photographer for the past ten years, I have also expanded my experience and knowledge to include the art of Graphic Design.

This portfolio includes samples of design for print. I am currently developing my portfolio of design for web and multimedia that will be featured in June!

Enjoy!

Featured Gallery of the Month - APRIL

This month's featured portfolio is fitting for the Spring season. My "outside" portfolio features images created during my travels. I enjoy photographing both during the day and at night.

Check out this night shot from Montezuma, Costa Rica:

To create this image I utilized a long exposure to capture both the ambient light shining from just behind me and the lightning from the storm offshore.

Enjoy!

Featured Gallery of the Month - March

For the next twelve months I will be highlighting each of my photography galleries and present to you new work in each category.

Beginning this month I would like to show you my high-resolution panoramic images and tell you a little about the process that goes into creating these images.

Click Here to View the Enitre Panoramic Gallery

Many of my panoramic images including the image above (captured in March of 2010 at the entrance of the Grand Teton National Park) are created utilizing 10-25 separate exposures that are later stitched together digitally to create stunning large format prints. For example the Teton image's final resolution is 29458 pixels X 2896 pixels. That is enough resolution to make a truly photographic quality print over 8 feet wide! Details that could never be seen within a single exposure now jump out of the image when viewed closely.

Any of the panoramic images in my gallery are available for sale with custom printing and framing option available. Recently I have been experimenting with printing on removable wall art material. Similar to a decal but with great quality and removability this stuff looks great on the wall and is really cheap! Please contact me for more information.

Enjoy!
